Gift From Pope Symbolizes ‘Dark to Success Journey’- Kagame

0

When President Kagame visited the Vatican City in March this year on invitation by Pope Francis, he was presented with a gift.

“The gift was a designed photo which the Pope said symbolized a journey Rwanda has moved from darkness to a successful end,” President Paul Kagame told religious leaders and government officials at the National Prayer Breakfast on Sunday.

For President Kagame, the Pope’s gift was a similar sign of the tragedy Rwanda went through and where it is heading today.

One of the cultural beliefs in Rwanda is that ‘God spends the day elsewhere and comes home to Rwanda’.

However, according to President Kagame, during the 1994 genocide against Tutsi, “Humans became unrecognizable. The tragedy turned the country into one that even God did not want to associate with.”

The President told participants gathered at Radisson Blu and Convention Centre in Kigali that Rwanda was dragged into a horrific genocide due to bad leadership, but has rejuvenated and will never be the one God does not want to be part of ever again.

“Today, God is back to spending the day elsewhere and coming back home to Rwanda. This country sank so low, the only way forward is to go up and transform this country,” the President said.

“What happened in this nation will never happen again,” he added.

Lambert Bariho, one of the key speakers at the breakfast related President Kagame to King David of Israel who turned his people torn-apart into a united and civilized Israel.

At the age of 40, the biblical King David of Israel was known for his diverse skills as both a warrior and a writer of psalms. Kind David is biblically known for uniting the people of Israel, led them to victory

in battle, conquered land and paved way for his predecessors, Solomon and today today, Israel stands as a global icon.

In similar circumstance, in 1994, Bariho said, Rwandans almost lost their country as over 1 million people died during the 100-day Genocide against Tutsi, but today, God has given Rwandans someone
similar to ‘King David’.

Today, he told the gathering that Rwanda has achieved a lot worth to be thankful for.

“Rwandans have countless things to be thankful for. We have regained peace and stability, justice has prevailed…health sector has been revamped…to mention but a few,” Bariho said. While religious leaders praised Kagame’s leadership in transforming the country, the President, reminded them that; “Leadership will not be given to you for free. You have to work for it to deserve it.”

According to President Kagame, “Education gives you knowledge but using this knowledge appropriately is an individual choice you have to make. To grow towards taking responsibilities, you have to work. Be
willing to work hard not being contented with others doing the work.”

This year’s National Prayer Breakfast marked 22nd anniversary since the annual program was launched in 1995.

0

The Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Esperance Nyirasafari said that the ideal of Umugoroba w’Ababyeyi (evening of parents), a social cohesion should be given value and strengthened to drive the agenda of togetherness in ensuring community safety and development.

The Minister made the remarks on September 10 in Nyamagabe District, where she attended and addressed Umugoroba w’Ababyeyi in Bwama Cell in Kamegeri.
The community gathering was also attended by the Minister of Health, Dr. Diana Gashumba, the Governor of Southern Province Marie Rose Mureshyankwano, Mayor of Nyamagabe Philbert Mugisha and the District Police Commander, Supt. François Segakwaya.
Similar Umugoroba w’Ababyeyi, organized by the district local authorities and security organs including Police and army, was held concurrently in all cells of Nyamagabe.

Minister Nyirasafari urged the residents to desist from family conflicts and fight anything that can fuel domestic wrangles.

She also challenged parents to act responsibly and give parental care to their children to direct them towards the right path.
“You should all own the ideal of ensuring conflict-free households and crime-free communities; families and communities that strive for the rights of everyone including children and women; this is what Umugoroba w’Ababyeyi strives for,” Minister Nyirasafari said.

She advised the youth to desist from malpractices such as sexual acts which results from unwanted pregnancies and early parenthood; HIV infections and school dropouts.

The Minister also warned parents and guardians, who get their children out of school to engage them in commercial activities or domestic chores, which accounts to “child labour.”

“Children should be in school not in child labour activities that shapes them into criminals like drug abusers and dealers. The universal education was adopted to ensure that every child get education to become better people that the country needs to transform their country,” she said.

In an interview, the DPC said that the social cohesion is instrumental in driving community policing efforts and bringing the people together to watch out for each other through Neighborhood Watch.

“Through Umugoroba w’ababyeyi, conflicting couples and families are counseled and reunited; criminals are reported; parents who take their children out of school are reported and children identified and taken back to school; drug dealers are also reported and arrested,” Supt. Segakwaya said.

Conceived in 2010, Umugoroba w’Ababyeyi was initially an evening that set aside to bring women together to talk and explore ways to support each other.
What was originally a simple evening was developed and broadened further to involve men and sometimes children, and, in March 2013, Umugoroba w’Ababyeyi was officially born.

Stromae victim of repeated anxiety attacks

0

The singer-songwriter was forced to interrupt his tour in 2015 after taking an anti-malaria treatment with violent side effects.

Do not talk anymore about Lariam at Stromae: This anti-malaria drug has killed his life in the air and he still complains about adverse effects two years after taking it. “There’s a before and after Lariam,” the singer told Marianne magazine.

Today, I am still sensitive to anxiety attacks. I have had to go back to the emergency room in the hospital. I have little regret in my life, but if I could go back and avoid taking Lariam, I would do it without hesitation … “

Some side effects of the drug are well known to practitioners: Lariam can sometimes cause serious psychiatric disorders, such as nightmares, mental confusion, paranoia, hallucinations or psychoses, effects that sometimes last several months after the end of the taking . The medication is also advised against people already anxious, depressed, or showing psychiatric disorders, as specified in the instructions for use. According to a study conducted in 1991, one in 10,000 people would have severe reactions to treatment.

“I thought I had fallen into madness”

In the spring of 2015, Stromae link up the dates of his long tour, in the wake of the huge success of his album Racine Carrée – sold 2.5 million copies. He plans to perform in Africa, he is naturally prescribed Lariam, to prevent malaria, but the interpreter of “Formidable” ends up canceling everything before being hospitalized urgently in June. What happened ? The Belgian singer touched on this African tour with fatigue, stress and anxiety, as he told Libération last spring.

“I could not sleep anymore, the date of the concert in Rwanda was approaching. The first time I went, I was six. And you know, my father was killed during the genocide, said the singer on at Quotidien. After 150 dates, I was flat. I did not support my anti-malaria treatment, it spun me hallucinations. I thought I had fallen into madness. I was diagnosed with psychic decompensation. I could have done a bullshit, I was no longer myself … ”

The singer, however, managed to finish his tour, notably with a passage in the United States, before giving himself a break, as much to rest as to regain the inspiration. He has since married his companion Coralie, a stylist who took care of his look before launching his own collections staggered under the Mosaert brand. Since then, the star has helped his wife in his ready-to-wear lines, sometimes gives a helping hand to other artists, such as recently for a Vitaa single or Yael Naim’s “Coward” clip, and would floor in the biggest secret on a musical adapted from the Book of the jungle, from Kipling.

Rwanda Standards Board , TMEA and BSI Conduct Quality Management System Experience Sharing

0

Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) in collaboration with the British Standards Institution (BSI), through the support of Trade Mark East Africa, conduct an experience sharing workshop on ISO 9001-Quality Management System (QMS) standard.

Speaking at the official opening of the workshop, Mr. Raymond Murenzi Director General of Rwanda Standards Board emphasized the importance of implementing QMS standard:

“Rwanda has started a new era to build quality service- driven economy. This endeavor has called to instigating the culture of customer care and quality service in all lines of either public or private businesses.

In furtherance of this effort, Rwanda Standards Board partnered with British Standards Institution (BSI) under support by Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) to build capacity of nine pilot organizations in implementing ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management system, the standard regarded as the foundation towards the envisaged service delivery destination.

Considering benefits from implementation of that standard including: improved productivity and efficiency, competitive advantage of the products and company brand and increased marketing and sales opportunities, among others, RSB and our partners above mentioned organized this experience sharing meeting to bring together more than 100 institutions and companies from both public and private sector to share information and benefits of implementing service standards, and therefore contribute in fast-tracking the country’s vision to become a service-driven economy”.

Ms Anataria Karimba, representing TMEA, saluted progress being made in Rwanda to raise awareness of QMS and other standards, and congratulated RSB and BSI upon remarkable strides made from the partnership between both Standards Bodies. She noted that the service industry is the backbone of the country’s economy and hence promoting service standards is very important to ensure Rwanda builds a competitive economy full of cross-border opportunities.

Trade Mark East Africa is funding Phase 1b of a project titled, “Twinning support to the Rwanda Standards Board to strengthen quality infrastructure and facilitate Rwandan businesses to export” (April 2015 – December 2017), which is being implemented by The British Standards Institution (BSI). The overall objective is to enhance the competitiveness of Rwanda’s economy and increase exports, which meet international and regional standards while reducing the barriers to domestic, regional and international trade and protecting consumers from sub-standard and unsafe products.

Phase 1a of the project started in January 2012 and was completed in December 2014. Under the first phase of the project, which was also implemented by BSI, one component focused on capacity building on HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) for the food and agricultural sector where assistance was provided, inter alia, to 21 enterprises in Rwanda.

The ongoing Phase 1b of the project consists of three Components:

Component 1 – Strategic Support for the Institutional Development of the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB)
Component 2 – Private Sector Awareness Raising and Capacity Building on Standards (ISO 22000 and ISO 9001)
Component 3 – Capacity building in the use and maintenance of Testing Equipment (in RSB’s laboratories)

The objective of Component 2 is to broaden the scope of private sector assistance from HACCP to ISO 22000 dealing with Food Safety Management Systems and ISO 9001 Quality Management System.

Under the sub-component on ISO 9001, an awareness raising workshop on ISO 9001:2008 was conducted for organizations to provide information about the standard and the methodology for capacity building on ISO 9001 under the project so that they could take an informed decision as to their participation in the project. Nine organizations were selected for participation in the capacity building project. Under the project for capacity building on ISO 9001, three training events were held, the first one was a workshop on “The Implementation of ISO/FDIS 9001:2015 and Quality Tools” in September 2015, the second one was a workshop on “Internal Audit of ISO 9001:2015 QMS” in April 2016 and the third one was a “Lead Auditor Training Course on ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems” in September 2016. The training events were conducted for personnel from the nine pilot organizations under the project, local consultants and RSB officers including its auditors. In between the training events assistance was provided to the nine organizations to implement ISO 9001, through regular visits by local and regional consultants through onsite and offsite support.

Ms Clementine Niyonkuru, a participant from Ngali Energy Limited, one of the nine project enterprises that have been implanting QMS witnessed some benefits her organization acquired from implementing QMS standard: “We have been implementing ISO 9001 standard for a while. In our organization we have witnessed important positive changes from the way we used to work and the way we are working. QMS helped us truly setting up a working system in which everyone knows his/her responsibilities and we complement each other towards a common goal-customer satisfaction. We observed that we are now more effective, efficient and we keep track of our customers’ attitude towards the service we deliver and easily identify areas of improvement”.

The objective of the experience-sharing workshops is to enable you to obtain information about the implementation of ISO 9001 QMS as done in the pilot organizations so that participating organization could become interested in implementing this standard, improve the quality of their products and services and obtain QMS certification.

ISO 9001 is an international standard applicable to all sectors of industry, including manufacturing and service, and to private or public organizations of all sizes. It is not a product standard but a management system standard to demonstrate an organization’s ability to provide consistently products or services that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements and to enhance customer satisfaction. ISO 9001 specifies ‘what’ is required to be done by an organization but does not indicate ‘how’ it should be done, thus giving an organization great flexibility in implementing the standard.

When Kagame Bowed to Silverback ‘the King and President’

0

President Paul Kagame’s encounter with the mountain gorilla’s fourteen years ago is a fresh memory. By then, he was in company of a European friend when they trekked into the Virunga national park.

“There was a baby gorilla, small, just months old, or maybe one year or something. So the young gorilla screamed. I don’t know what happened to it. The silverback, maybe the father came charging at us, I think, in protection of its baby,” Kagame narrated.

Kagame was today officiating at the 13th annual gorilla naming ceremony (Kwita Izina) on Friday in Kinigi, Musanze District – 19 baby gorillas were named.

The gorilla encounter still vivid in his memory, President Kagame told thousands of visitors and local residents at the ceremony; “Our guide, who might be here told us to humble ourselves, squat and don’t even dare look in the eyes of the silverback…so we obeyed.”

As this was happening, Kagame’s friend suggested the president to do something in his capacity of a Head of State ruling on everything, including the gorillas themselves.

“As we were humbling ourselves, the visitor whispered at me. “Can you just tell the gorillas that you are the president of this country?,” Kagame remembered, but in his response to the friend, ” I said I don’t want trouble with the gorillas…we went back safely,” Kagame said.

Rwanda legacy in Gorillas

Amidst cheers, Kagame told thousands of Rwandans and guests at the event that gorillas shouldn’t be taken for granted and it should be everyone’s responsibility to protect them.

“They (gorillas) are our legacy. They are happy in their habitat, silverback feels he is the king and even as president, we still have to be humble and respect them,” Kagame said.

“Gorillas are precious and we have to do our best to protect their habitat, like all other animals in the wildlife across the country.”

Kagame also reminded the communities surrounding national parks to preserve the gorilla habitat since they too benefit from the tourism activities in the area.

Rwanda has increased tourism revenue sharing whereby communities neighbouring national parks will get 10% of tourism revenues destined to construction of public infrastructure – schools, health centres and roads – up from 5%.

From 2005 to 2016, Rwanda spent Rwf531 million on community activitie

This year, two primary schools were launched including; Akagera Primary School in Rwimbogo sector, Gatsibo district and Rugera Primary school – adjacent to Nyungwe national park in Rusizi district on June 23rd and 29th respectively.

In Kabatwa cell, Nyabihu district, a health centre adjacent to volcano national park was launched on August 17.

Meanwhile, the 13th Kwita Izina attracted hundreds of conservationists from across the world.

Among guests who named 19 baby gorillas include Laurent Lamo the former Prime Minister of Haiti, Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, Veronica Varekova, a super model and conservationist, among others including Gisa Gakwisi the boy who molded Radisson and Kigali Convection Center out of clay.

Belize Akaliza, Chief Tourism Officer at RDB said that since the initial launch of Kwita Izina in 2005, a total of 239 mountain baby gorillas have been named.

When Rwanda started naming gorillas in 2005, there were only 8 groups of gorillas and these have grown to 20 groups which is a great achievement of conservation efforts.

Today President Kagame also launched Bisate Lodge- one of Rwanda’s luxury hospitality facilities located in Kinigi.

Other luxury lodges like Amakoro Lodge was also launched earlier this year and Singita lodge is also expected to be completed and launched soon.

Claire Akamanzi the CEO of RDB also highlighted achievements of gorilla tourism and how communities have benefited.

The number of people visiting Volcanoes National Park has more than doubled from 16,000 to 32,000 between the year 2010 and 2016. Tourism alone contributes 30% of exports in Rwanda and 3% of the country’s total GDP.
